CHAPTER FIFTEEN

maury

Only fourteen.

They’d all gasped as though that was too young to be changed into a shifter, and their reaction had surprised me. Apparently, they had standards.

I had so much to learn about pride life. Based on my attack at seventeen, I didn’t know there were minimal ages or even that there was a whole process for bringing new shifters into the pride. The shifter pride wasn’t the deranged bunch I had always believed them to be, and my first introduction to a cat shifter was the way they all were.

Anthony had made the announcement as though he had nothing to fear, and maybe he didn’t because he was the alpha. But I did. Those two female shifters from the bar had been aggressive and knew about the Rogue in the bayou. I wondered if Anthony knew about them. Was it worth telling him?

I scanned the barbecue crowd, still not seeing their faces. Wouldn’t they be surprised when they figured out I wasn’t simply a guest anymore? Could I even point them out to Anthony if I saw them again? Maybe they had information Anthony needed. I chewed my bottom lip and crossed my arms.

At that moment, Anthony came close, and the hair on my neck stood up. Not out of fear, but something else, something magnetic between us. I doubted he felt it, but it tickled ideas and thoughts I never had. So much that even the cheetah in my head approved of him, and that was saying something since she and I didn’t typically communicate on any level.

“Doing okay so far?” Anthony asked, keeping his voice quiet.

“Yeah, thanks for the kind introduction.”

“No problem. Most everybody here is friendly. Those that aren’t just aren’t friendly, and it doesn’t have anything to do with you.”

“From your perspective,” I said.

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“It means your perspective is slightly different than most everyone else’s since you’re the alpha.”

He frowned. “Have you had a run in with someone?”

“Laura said she’s going to introduce me around.” Hopefully, I successfully side-stepped his question. Before I told him about the bathroom bimbos, I wanted to check with Laura. “I need to go.”

“She knows more people by name than I do.” He gave me a sheepish grin. “Though, that’s true of Kobie, too. Enjoy the night.” He moved away, slipping into a collection of men holding drinks and smelling of a cigar of some kind.

“It’s a bit like catnip,” one of the guys said, and Anthony laughed, the sound smooth as silk.

Anthony had such an easy way about him, and it drew me to him in a way I’d never experienced with any person before. I wanted to be near him, next to him, with him all the time. Forces I didn’t understand pulled me toward him, and I couldn’t shake the feeling maybe he felt it, too.

I wouldn’t have guessed glowing amber eyes and a moody rich-boy-asshole was my type. Though, I suspected it might be because he’d been the first man who had rescued me from an attack and made sure I was safe.
